“Wing Chun gets a bad rap and I have to say I agree with most of it. I’ve been training as a professional pretty much my entire life. Wing Chun looks good on paper but you have to pressure test it. We do that on our mat. We compete in boxing, kickboxing, cage fighting, BJJ comps. You name it, we’ll have a crack at it. We have multiple champions for our efforts. My viewpoint on Wing Chun is controversial, its history, how it should be trained and its practical applications – pretty much everyone’s got it wrong.” -Rick Spain
I admire his [Rick Spain’s] open-mindedness and willingness to evolve.
I’ve never heard anything but Kung Fu respect for Rick Spain and his accomplishments.
He [Rick Spain] had over 100 amateur kickboxing matches and 37 pro fights. Among his achievements were winning a World Invitational Kung Fu (that’s KUNG FU, not kickboxing) championship in 1982. This championship was fought with very light gloves and the rules allowed just about anything, including elbows to the back of the neck, etc. The championship was not held again as the number of injuries made it almost impossible to attract or retain sponsors for a repeat.
He’s [Rick Spain] got to be an encyclopedia by now. Would love to actually see how he pieces it altogether.
The best Wing Chun I’ve felt (and his students love to show trust me ) is from Rick Spain’s direct students. His students are very hands on and application driven and seem to have a solid mind when it comes to combat.
Rick Spain is one of the best full contact fighters Australia ever produced, a Kyokushin Black belt, a BJJ Black belt and one of the most experienced Wing Chun Sifu on the continent.
If you want to learn Wing Chun that works in a fight i wouldn’t look anywhere else.
